Here's an interesting wrench thrown in by the Brewers: With the 116th pick in the 2014 MLB draft, Milwaukee has chosen outfielder Troy Stokes, a high school player out of Maryland.
I say it's interesting, because everyone figured the team would be going very safe in Day Two of the draft in an effort to save some money for their first three overall picks. Now, the new strategy may be to save money to sign four of their first five picks.
Stokes is the fourth prep player taken by the Brewers. His biggest asset is certainly his speed: Perfect Game USA has him running the 60-yard dash in 6.47 seconds and projects him as a lead-off hitter with blazing speed on the basepaths and in center field. He's raw and needs work on his footwork but has a quick first step that helps him make up for mistakes. He also is reportedly a smart player.
He's not the biggest guy, coming in at 5'10" and 180 pounds. He isn't likely to hit for a lot of power, but rather will be a contact player with gap hitting potential. His speed should certainly allow him to pick up a few extra base hits.
Scout.com had Stokes ranked the 121st-best prep school player coming available in this draft.
Stokes is committed verbally to the University of Maryland.
