Fangraphs Win Expectancy Chart
The Brewers almost ended up being delayed as long as they actually played today. Multiple rain delays resulted in two hours and thirteen minutes of downtime while Milwaukee and Pittsburgh played for a total of just over three hours.
Jimmy Nelson had a fantastic start today despite the rain, going six innings and allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out seven batters. He got in trouble a couple times, allowing a walk and a single to lead off both the third and fifth innings. Both times, however, he was able to pull through and get tough outs to escape unscathed.
It's good that Nelson did so well, because AJ Burnett was also on his game. The Brewers offense managed just five hits and a walk over his seven frames, but they did get one run on him. Aramis Ramirez led off the fifth with a walk, then moved to third on a Gerardo Parra double. With no outs, all it took was a ground out from Jean Segura to bring Ramirez home to open up scoring. The Brewers got an insurance run in the eighth when three straight singles were capped off with Ryan Braun driving in Carlos Gomez.
The Brewers bullpen managed to keep the lead as Jonathan Broxton used two strikeouts to mitigate two waks and Jeremy Jeffress and Francisco Rodriguez maintained the lead over the eighth and ninth.
The Brewers and Pirates play again tomorrow with, hopefully, less rain. First pitch is at 6:05 CT.
