Win: Lackey (12-9)
Loss: Nelson (11-13)
HR: Segura (5), Carpenter (23)
The Brewers lost. That doesn't really matter. What matters is the status of Jimmy Nelson, who was removed from the game after being struck in the face by a line-drive that was travelling at over 100 MPH.
Tommy Pham hit an 89 MPH slider right back at the mound and the ball found the side of Nelson's head. The young pitcher immediately collapsed and remained on the ground for some time. Fortunately, however, Nelson walked off the field on his own and later tests revealed he only suffered a bruise.
That's fortunate for Nelson and the Brewers. The 26-year-old is a big part of the team's future and, though the end of the season is drawing near, you don't want to see those guys get injured. You don't want to see anyone get injured, regardless of their status. But Nelson looks like he'll be OK.
Performance-wise, this wasn't Nelson's best night. Four earned runs in two innings. Meanwhile John Lackey looked like a Cy Young contender. It would be nice if this was the last time the Brewers had to face the Cardinals this year (we've had enough pain), but they'll have a four-game series later in September.
Up next for Milwaukee, though, is the Reds. First pitch tomorrow is set for 7:10 CT.
