Well it was yet another rough outing for the Brewers Opening Day starter. Wily Peralta lasted 5 innings. But in doing so he allowed 5 runs. One a home run to Randal Grichuk, his first of the season. Peralta did manage 5 strike outs, but he also walked 2 and allowed 7 hits. It's a rebuilding year for the Brewers so Peralta has a long leash, but if he doesn't start improving there will come a time when the Brewers have to decide if his future really is in the rotation.
In stark contract, Cardinals' lefty Jaime Garcia was excellent. Nearly pristine, in fact. He pitched a complete game today. The only two blemishes on his card today were a base hit by Domingo Santana and a base on balls from Martin Maldonado. Perhaps just as impressive was his 13 strike outs!
Needless to say, there's nothing good to say about the Brewers offense today.
After Peralta left the game, Chris Capuano tossed two innings. He allowed two runs in the process, including a home run to Jeremy Hazelbaker. A silver lining today was Sam Freeman's outing. He one inning today, allowing one hit, while striking out two batters. It was his first clean inning with the Brewers. So maybe he has finally shaken all the rust off.
The Brewers fall to 4-5 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 5-4. Next the Brewers travel to Pittsburgh for a weekend series against the Pirates.
