Brewers (9-15) vs Angels (12-13) series preview

Mike Trout and the Angels head to Milwaukee for a three game set.

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

What a fleshy bag of mixed emotions it must be to live as an Angels fan. On the one hand they have a generational talent on their team in the form of Mike Trout. Seriously, he's super good. In ten years from now we might be calling this time period the (Bryce) Harper/Trout era of baseball. And that's why it must be so painful to be a fan of this team--the rest of it kind of sucks.

Sure they have Garrett Richards who is an awesome starting pitcher. Kole Calhoun should carve out a nice career. But then what? This is a team that's starting Johnny Giavotella and Rafael Ortega. And let's not forget about Jered Weaver who has a fastball that sits in the mid-80's. It would be different if they, like the Brewers, were rebuilding. But they've spent $165 million to build this team. It's meant to contend and that's just not going to happen.

But at least their farm system is really good and will be sending up help soon. Oh wait, that's the Brewers farm system. The Angels' is the worst in baseball by a country mile. I won't ever claim to be an expert in these matters, but I know a good deal about most farms systems. And the Angels is the worst I've ever seen since I started paying attention to that sort of thing. At some point one has to wonder if they're going to be forced to trade Trout. It kind of seems inevitable.

This series will be in the National League meaning the Angels cannot DH Albert Pujols. It'll be interesting to see how many games he starts at first. Neither he nor CJ Cron have done much to push for the playing time over the other. In fact they've both been two of the Angels' worst hitters.

Tuesday should be of special interest to Brewers fans. It will be the first start for the major league team by RHP Junior Guerra. He was claimed off waivers from the White Sox in the early offseason. In fact, it was David Stearns' first move as Brewers GM.
