The Brewers bullpen shuffle continued today. Following the game, they placed Michael Blazek on the 15-day DL with a right elbow impingement. In a corresponding move, the Brewers recalled reliever Jacob Barnes from Triple-A Colorado Springs. This will be Barnes' major league debut.
The DL stint for Blazek is precautionary more than anything else. The Brewers ran some tests on him, and so far everything appears fine. The only reason that the Brewers placed Blazek on the DL is to get him completely healthy. If that's the case, this shouldn't be much longer than a minimum DL stint.
This is the third roster move involving the bullpen that the Brewers have made in the last few days. Since yesterday, here is what they have done:
- Claimed Neil Ramirez off waivers
- Activated Will Smith from the DL
- Recalled Jacob Barnes
- Placed Michael Blazek on the DL
- Optioned David Goforth
The good news here is, with Zach Davies' pitching gem today, the bullpen should be nice and rested for the weekend series against the Phillies. Only Jeremy Jeffress was used today, and he just received an inning of work.
Meanwhile, this is the first major-league call-up for Jacob Barnes. He has been excellent for Triple-A Colorado Springs, posting a 1.21 ERA and 3.17 FIP in 22.1 innings over 17 appearances. He has also posted a 9.27 K/9 and 2.82 BB/9.
