Box Score

With Matt Garza starting today, the Brewers didn’t have much of a chance. It didn’t take long for the Brewers to fall behind, with two walks ahead of Matt Joyce, who hit a three-run home run to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

The Brewers did get a run back in the third inning with a Jonathan Villar solo home run to make it 3-1. However, the Pirates took it right back in the third inning on a RBI groundout. They got another run in the fourth on a RBI single to make it 5-1. Garza went one more inning, finishing the day with five runs on eight hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Francisco Liriano was sharp with his command. He went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, and collected thirteen strikeouts in the process. His day ended with two more runs allowed, coming on a Hernan Perez double and Scooter Gennett groundout.

The bullpens went to work after that. Jhan Marinez went two innings and just allowed a hit and a walk. Blaine Boyer just went an inning and allowed two hits.

The Brewers return to Miller Park tomorrow for a ten-game homestand. First up is the Cubs. Jason Hammel pitches against Jimmy Nelson in the opener. First pitch is at 7:10 pm.
