UPDATE 7/31 @ 10:10 AM: Jonathan Lucroy has vetoed the trade. Post with more details is available here. Original story follows.
The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed in principle to send All Star catcher Jonathon Lucroy to the Cleveland Indians, as reported by Matt R. Lyons of Let's Go Tribe. The deal is not finalized, as medicals must be exchanged, and the return to the Brewers is not yet confirmed.
The centerpiece of the trade is High-A catcher Francisco Mejia, a switch hitter. Mejia currently has a 42 game hitting streak, and will thouroughly shift the balance of power in the catching-poor Brewers' farm system.
Other possible prospects include Yu-Cheng Chang, a 20 year old shortstop signed in 2013 from Taiwan.
Greg Allen, a 22 year old outfielder also in High-A. Allen went to San Diego State.
Justus Sheffield is a left handed pitcher who is 20 years old and was taken in the first round of the 2014 draft. He was drafted out of high school from Tullahoma, Tennessee. He has also been pitching at Lynchburg in high Class A.
The final name mentioned is Tristan McKenzie, a pitcher taken 42nd overall in the 2015 draft. The righty is 19 and was taken out of high school, from Royal Palm Beach, Florida. McKenzie is still pitching (very effectively) in short season A ball.
It is unclear which and how many of the above are included in the trade. Top prospects Bradley Zimmer and Clint Frazier are not included.
This trade fits much more into the pattern that David Stearns is following in rebuilding the Brewers than the trade proposal submitted earlier by the New York Mets, which included major leaguer Travis d'Arnaud and AAA prospect/sometime Met Brandon Nimmo, an outfielder.
If the Brewers are getting both Sheffield and McKenzie in this trade I will be very happy. It continues to rebuild the minor league system before tackling rebuilding the major league team.
We will update this as information is received.
UPDATE:
According to Jen Mac Ramos of MLB Daily Dish, the deal is Lucroy in exchange for C Francisco Mejia, OF Greg Allen, INF Yu-Cheng Chang, and a fourth prospect. It sounds like that player will be a pitcher. Jeff Passan tweets that the deal may involve one of LHP Justus Sheffield or RHP Triston McKenzie, with Paul Hoynes also noting that Sheffield may be a part of the package heading to Milwaukee.
Lucroy still needs to waive his no trade and neither club has announced the deal officially yet.
UPDATE 2:
The Indians are reportedly sending two of their top prospects, OF Clint Frazier and OF Justus Sheffield, to the Yankees in exchange for Andrew Miller. No word yet if this will affect the Lucroy trade, though obviously Sheffield would now not be a part of it.
UPDATE 3:
Most recent report from Jonathan Mayo reports that Shawn Armstrong would be the fourth player in the deal.
