Following yesterday’s game, manager Craig Counsell noted that Ryan Braun had a calf strain, and could be out for some time. Reports indicated the DL would be in play for this injury, and we would know more details today. Those details are starting to come out this morning.
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed this morning that Ryan Braun will go on the DL today. However, we are still waiting to hear about who will get the call-up for the Brewers. The team has remained tight-lipped about who they are going to call up, though we should know soon with a game to play tonight.
The only thing we can say for sure at this point is that it will be a position player. With the Brewers only carrying 12 position players, as well as two true outfielders beyond Braun (plus Franklin, who the Brewers list as an outfielder), they can’t afford to lose depth. The question at this point is what player the Brewers bring up. They could do an equivalent exchange and call up another outfielder, where several options are available (Lewis Brinson, Brett Phillips, Ryan Cordell, Michael Reed, Kyle Wren, Kirk Nieuwenhuis). They could also choose to call up another utility player and just let some of the current players (Eric Thames, Hernan Perez, Nick Franklin) cover the position. Of course, there’s always the possibility that, with an open 40-man spot, GM David Stearns will strike again with another waiver claim.
We should know more about the corresponding move soon. Stay tuned, we will update you once the move is known.
