The pick is in and the Milwaukee Brewers’ second draft pick of the day is:
Caden Lemons
Right-hand pitcher, Vestavia Hills High School
6’6” 175 lbs.
Pre-draft rankings:
MLB.com: 77
Baseball America: 57
Minor League Ball: 70
MLB Pipeline Tool Grades:
Fastball: 65 || Slider: 50 || Curveball: 45 || Changeup: 50 || Control: 45 || Overall: 45
Lemons is more projection than most people ask for. The 6’6” righty has a huge fastball that peaks at 97 MPH and could add more as he builds strength and weight.
The problem with the 6’6” frame is that Lemons struggles to repeat his delivery and has trouble hitting the strike zone. His slider is his next best pitch but he’ll mix in an ok curve to keep hitters off guard. He shows surprising feel of a changeup for a high school pitcher.
The Brewers clearly believe they’ll be able to rectify this problem. If they do, Lemons could be an elite starter with a four pitch mix.
