Milwaukee Brewers sign 1st-rounder Keston Hiura to under slot bonus

8

The Milwaukee Brewers have reportedly signed the 9th overall pick of the draft, Keston Hiura of UC-Irvine, to an under slot bonus of $4 mil. Hiura was hailed as the "best collegiate hitter" in this year's draft class, but concerns regarding a possible Tommy John surgery brought his bonus down a bit. According to Adam McCalvy, however, Hiura is expected to begin a throwing program right away and if all goes well, he will avoid going under the knife and start his career in low-A Wisconsin. The 9th pick came with a slot value of $4,570,000, which means the Brewers have saved $570,000 against their pool to use for other picks. The club has already signed three players to over slot bonuses, so the extra money will be important. You can follow along with all the signings and bonuses using our 2017 MLB Draft Tracker.
