Brewers News and Notes
We’ve hit the All-Star Break, and the Brewers are not only still in first place, but they are continuing to build their lead more and more. It’s hit a season-high 5.5 games ahead of second place, and they are the only team above .500 in the NL Central. It’s a strange year in the National League as only five teams are above .500 at this point (and those are currently the five teams with playoff spots). If the season ended today, the Brewers would face the Nationals in the Division Series, while the NL West would basically stage their own mini-playoff for a spot in the Championship Series.
The Brewers also have the advantage of only having 71 games to go in the second half of the season. It doesn’t sound like much, but they’ve played the second-most games so far this season, tied with the Rockies and only one behind the Angels. Meanwhile, the Cubs, Cardinals, and Reds have all played 88 games, and the Pirates 89. That means there’s more rest in the upcoming schedule for the Brewers, and no double-headers scheduled for now. In fact, the Brewers longest streak of games in a row in the second half is 13 games. Having extra rest going down the stretch could be a big benefit for this team.
It’s not time to rest yet on that good schedule or that lead, though. A lot can happen in 71 games, and the Brewers can’t let up on the accelerator yet. However, they’ve got a margin of error heading into the second half now. Would playing around .500 (36-35) be enough to hit the postseason? That would mean the Cardinals and Cubs would have to play around 43-31 to catch up, which is still a reasonable goal. We’ve also seen some rough collapses (2014) in the second half of the season.
For now, it’s four days off as the Brewers prepare to start the second half of the season against the Phillies on Friday.
