Brewers News and Notes
Trade season kicked off in full yesterday, but it wasn’t the Brewers that kicked it off. It was the Cubs, who traded several prospects to acquire Jose Quintana. While it’s a big acquisitio for them, the immediate response was that the Brewers shouldn’t panic and respond with a trade. The Brewers agreed with about half of that. While they didn’t panic, they did make a small trade of their own, acquiring reliever Tyler Webb from the Yankees. It was a small, smart trade, dealing a player who was blocked for a player with several years of control to help the bullpen. Webb was brought up right away, along with Brett Phillips from Triple-A. Michael Blazek was optioned down to clear a spot needed for one of them, and the other took the open spot from Junior Guerra’s DL stint.
The second half kicks off today, and the Brewers have a 5 1⁄2 game lead in the NL Central. Can they hold on to it? There’s 71 games to go, and it starts tonight with the opening of a three-game set against the Phillies.
