Brewers News and Notes

The buzz around the Brewers yesterday was in regards to the trade deadline. Would the Brewers pull off a big trade prior to the deadline, or would they stick with what they have? At the end of the day, they mostly decided to stick with the current roster, but they did make one addition. They brought back reliever Jeremy Jeffress in a trade with the Rangers, sending prospect Tayler Scott in return. This trade is more of a reclamation project than a competitive trade. Jeffress has been struggling in Texas this season, and with the Rangers selling, they were willing to trade him. The Brewers are going to see if they can turn him back around, and if they can’t, it’s a low risk play anyway, and won’t cost them much.

Meanwhile, several other teams improved, including the Cubs, Dodgers, and Yankees, who were some of the big buyers at the deadline. The Brewers decision to not make a move doesn’t mean they don’t intend to compete, it just means they weren’t willing to meet the price of any of the sellers. Will that come back to hurt them? We won’t know for a while, because it partially depends on if the prospects they held on to develop or not.
