Earlier this year, during the regular season, there was some speculation about a possible mutual interest between Milwaukee Brewers’ GM David Stearns and the New York Mets for their vacant general manager position, but that never materialized.
There has been reported interest in former Brewer GM Doug Melvin (New York) and assistant Matt Arnold (San Francisco), and bench coach Pat Murphy was recently linked to the Texas Rangers’ managerial position.
These things happen when an organization has success, and when the success extends to two seasons - meaning that it presumably isn’t a fluke - it occurs more frequently.
Ken Rosenthal reports that the San Francisco Giants asked the Brewers for permission to talk to Stearns about the Giants’ front office, specifically the President of Baseball Operations:
#SFGiants asked to speak to #Brewers GM David Stearns about becoming their president of baseball operations, but Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio denied permission, sources tell The Athletic. Stearns has at least one year left on his deal, sources say.

As stated in Rosenthal’s tweet, the Brewers and owner Mark Attanasio have denied the Giants permission to speak with Stearns about their front office vacancy. The specific terms of Stearns’ contract with Milwaukee have never been reported, but Attanasio recently noted that both his GM and manager Craig Counsell have “two or three years” remaining on their current deals.
Perhaps such interest will result in a change in title and salary adjustment for Stearns this offseason. With a World Series title in his pocket, Brewer fans would be all for that.
We can expect further rumors, speculation, and news on these fronts into the offseason. It’s a compliment!
