SNY.tv’s Andy Martino is reporting that the Milwaukee Brewers have checked in on New York Mets hurler Noah Syndergaard.

Martino states that Syndergaard is readily available to other teams, but the Mets are waiting on an offer that appeals to them. Along with the Brewers, he reports that the Rockies have joined the mix, although he says it’s not likely Colorado could put together a package that would tempt the Mets enough.

Acquiring Syndergaard would come with a substantial price tag. At just 26 years of age, Syndergaard is controllable through 2021. Thor puts up outstanding numbers when on the mound, though he has struggled to stay on the field in the last two seasons. Most of the injuries have been one-off occurrences, including an odd bout with hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Over his career, Syndergaard has a 2.92 ERA. His worst performance in that category came last season, with an ERA of 3.03, but performance metrics graded his season much better. FIP had him at 2.76 and DRA had him at a minuscule 2.47. Syndergaard has sat in the 10 per 9 inning strikeout range for most of his career while also limiting walks to an even 2 per 9 innings.

There’s no doubt he’d be a sizable addition to the Brewers’ rotation for the next few years. It’d be a lot of fun to watch a Syndergaard start followed by a couple innings of Hader, where hard fastballs, disgusting sliders and long hair would be abundant.

Any package to acquire Syndergaard likely starts with Keston Hiura or Corbin Burnes, so the cost would be tough to bear. It will be interesting to see how things develop and how motivated the Mets become to move Thor. In his article, Martino only lists the San Diego Padres as a significant player for the power righty. He states that the Padres are not willing to deal their top prospect, Fernando Tatis, Jr. Despite that, San Diego has plenty of talent to work with in the farm. MLB Pipeline ranks their entire top-10 among the top-100 prospects in baseball.
