Shutouts happen every once in a while. Today just happened to be one of those days.

It just was a rough day for the Brewers offense. They managed just seven baserunners on the day, four from hits, two from walks, and one on a fielding error. Ryan Braun was the only Brewer to reach base multiple times, collecting one hits and one walk. All of the hits in the game for the Brewers were singles.

The only threat that the Brewers put together came in the second inning. Back-to-back singles from Orlando Arcia and Keon Broxton put two runners on base with two outs, but Jett Bandy flew out to end the inning. The Brewers also had two runners on base in the third, with Ryan Braun recording a single and Travis Shaw drawing a walk, but Domingo Santana struck out to end that inning. That was the Brewers last threat in the game, as they managed just two baserunners for the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, Yovani Gallardo had a good day, though one bad inning hurt him. In his first thinning, he issued a walk to Dustin Fowler, then former Brewer Khris Davis hit a two-run home run to put the Athletics up 2-0. He pitched around a single in the second inning for a clean inning. In the third, a fielding error by Gallardo allowed a leadoff runner. A single and walk loaded the bases, but a strikeout and groundout prevented any further damage. Gallardo finished the game with two runs allowed on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Overall, manager Craig Counsell was happy with Gallardo’s performance, noting that he was ahead to 13 of 14 batters, and just made one big mistake to Khris Davis.

In the bullpen, all of the Brewers relievers had good days. Here were the results:

  • Michael Brady: 1 IP, 2 K
  • J.J. Hoover: 1 IP, 1 H
  • Boone Logan: 1 IP, 1 BB
  • Jeremy Jeffress: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • Taylor Williams: 1 IP, 1 K
  • Jacob Barnes: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K

The Brewers are back in action tomorrow as they face the Rockies. Wade Miley will get another start as he faces Tyler Anderson. First pitch is at 2:05 pm, and it will be on both TV and radio.
