The Kansas City Royals had some hopes of repeating last season's fringe competition for a wild card spot, but their 5-15 start makes that unlikely. One of the mainstays of their two World Series appearances returns with the Milwaukee Brewers (14-9) in Lorenzo Cain, who is off to a fine start for Milwaukee. The Brewers are looking to extend a six game winning streak.
The Royals send former D'Backs and Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy (1-2, 2.35) to the hill and the Brewers counter with Zach Davies (1-2, 4.84).
Manny Pina returns from the DL and gets the start behind the plate, Eric Sogard remains the starting shortstop, and Ryan Braun draws the DH assignment for the first inter-league game of the season.
