I don’t know about you, but I was feeling pretty good coming into today’s game. The Milwaukee Brewers were 4-2 and ready to take on the division rival Chicago Cubs for the first time in 2018. Then the Brewers allowed a ton of runs. Eight runs to be exact. On top of that, Milwaukee was shut out, adding up to an 18 inning scoreless streak. In the middle of that mess, Travis Shaw was kicked from the game for arguing balls and strikes. Those things aren’t great, but they happen. It wasn’t awful until Corey Knebel collapsed in the ninth inning of a non-save situation with an apparent leg injury.
Knebel was throwing a pitch when he fell to the mound holding his leg. The Brewers’ trainers rushed out to check on the all-star closer. Then we got to witness the awful sight of Knebel being carried off, unable to put any weight on his leg.
As for the other bad things in the game, the Brewers allowed five runs behind Brent Suter. The defense did nothing to help the pitcher, who set the defense up for low-damage double plays and easy outs. Meanwhile, the team fumbled the ball in the infield and outfield, misplayed the ball off the outfield walls, and just looked lost altogether.
Meanwhile, the Brewers only managed three hits off the Cubs’ Lester. He toyed with the lineup and struck out six Brewers batters on the way to a great start.
Tomorrow, rookie Brandon Woodruff (0-0, 5.40 ERA) takes the mound against Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 1.50 ERA) at 7:10 p.m. The Brewers still have three games to make something out of this series. Hopefully, we learn good news about Knebel in the coming days.
