With Christian Yelich put on the disabled list through next Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers were having to use the same three players in the outfield every day, and with “older” outfielders like Ryan Braun and Lorenzo Cain needing the occasional day off the Brewers have added a familiar face to the major league roster:

It is possible that Phillips will only be up until Junior Guerra comes up Wednesday to make a start when a fifth starter is needed. It’s also possible that a different pitcher will go down, with Taylor Williams and J.J. Hoover on the roster, and Phillips will stay until Yelich is ready to return.
If Phillips is only up for two days he will likely start one game for Braun and one for Cain, as both are struggling recently. It was definitely the plan to give Braun regular time off this season after the additions of Yelich and Cain. Over the past week Braun and Cain have combined to slash .157/.214/.314 for an OPS of .528. They have two doubles, two homers, three runs scored, and three RBI.
Maverick has only one hit in fourteen plate appearances for the Sky Sox so far this spring, but he has drawn seven walks. That’s a .571 on base percentage, and his hit was a triple. In three separate stints with the Brewers last season Phillips slashed .276/.371/.448 for an OPS of .799. He had four homers in 98 plate appearances.
Phillips takes the roster spot vacated by Adrian Houser after Houser’s appearance yesterday.
