Brewers activate Tyler Saladino from DL; Eric Sogard designated for assignment

Not an unexpected move

The Milwaukee Brewers have designated infielder Eric Sogard for assignment to make room for Tyler Saladino’s return from the disabled list prior to tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves:

Saladino took over the starting job at short when Orlando Arcia was initially sent to AAA to work on his hitting, but severely twisted his ankle almost immediately, so Arcia came back up. Since then, both Brad Miller and Nate Orf were added to the roster so Sogard’s tenure as a Brewer may be at an end. Arcia was recently sent down again when Orf came up.

Sogard never got it going at the plate this year after a good season in 2017. His slash of .134/.241/.165 is pitcheresque (while not picturesque). Saladino is a solid fielder at short, and was acquired earlier this season from the White Sox for cash considerations. His batting line of .324/.359/.622, OPS .981, is not sustainable - but even if he performs at his career numbers (.236/.284/.343, OPS .625) he will be a marked improvement over Sogard.

Also working against Sogard is the left handed bat of Miller; Sogard becomes redundant and is the odd man out.
