We all knew it wasn’t likely, but deep inside every Milwaukee Brewers fan was a smidge of fear that GM David Stearns could leave the team for the New York Mets GM job. According to a report from Joel Sherman, there’s “strong belief” Brewers owner Mark Attanasio wouldn’t let Stearns out of his contract.
The speculation started after former Mets GM Sandy Alderson stepped down from the position due to a cancer diagnosis. A few reporters posited that David Stearns would make a lot of sense for the open position. Stearns is from New York, so the logical thinking was that he’d want to go home and help the team he grew up cheering for. There was no true connection outside of that theory.
This latest report validates what most thought: Stearns is under contract and the owner of the Cream City Nine isn’t open to his departure.
While this should squash all further rumors, we know it won’t. It should be an interesting few months worth of speculation once the Mets’ season ends and they start really looking for candidates.
