Brewers call up Burch Smith, send down Taylor Williams, DFA Jay Jackson

Help is coming from AAA to take a light burden off the taxed pitching staff

The Milwaukee Brewers announced that Burch Smith is coming up from AAA. To make room for Smith, Taylor Williams was optioned back down to San Antonio and Jay Jackson was DFA'd.

The Brewers obviously needed fresh arms after last night’s 18-inning affair. Smith has been phenomenal for the Mission this season. Over 26.1 innings, Smith has a 1.37 ERA with 27 Ks and a 0.95 WHIP. He last pitched for the Missions on May 1.

The right-handed pitcher had some time with the Kansas City Royals last season. Overall he struggled during his 38 appearances with a 6.92 ERA. FIP gave him a more favorable 5.41 and DRA added a slight bump in performance of 6.28. We covered more on Smith’s ability and past here.

Williams is the unfortunate victim of last night’s 18 innings. He covered four innings and threw 51 pitches. He got the win, but now ends up with a demotion since he likely wouldn’t be available for a few days.

Jackson was demoted to AAA Friday. He wouldn’t have been available for the Crew until he was off the Big League roster for 10 days. Because of this and because the team desperately needed another arm, he is now off the 40-man and can be claimed by another team.
