Milwaukee Brewers select contract of Zack Godley, option Corey Ray; Phil Bickford designated for assignment

Godley will get the start on the mound in the series finale with Miami

The Milwaukee Brewers selected the contract of Zack Godley. He will make the start against the Miami Marlins in the series finale. With Brett Anderson on the 10-day injured list, the Brewers have a need.

The Brewers signed Godley to a minor league contract likely with this type of scenario in mind. Godley has a lot of experience as a starter at the major league level and has had some nice season. In particular, Godley pitched to a 3.37 ERA in 2017 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Unfortunately he has been unable to sustain that effectiveness since.

Godley needs to induce ground balls at a high clip to be successful. Hopefully the Brewers’ pitching gurus have found something that will allow him to do that more than he has in the past couple of seasons.

To make room for Godley, the Brewers had to make a couple of moves as there was not a 40-man spot for Godley prior to today. It looks like Phil Bickford is the odd man out, and Corey Ray is going back to the Alternate Training Site.
