A championship euphoria was still hanging over the city of Milwaukee this morning, the day after the Bucks clinched their first NBA Championship since 1971. Many people around the city and state were operating at less than 100% after a long night of celebration, and the Milwaukee Brewers played like a team who stayed up past their bedtime on Tuesday night.
The Brewers were charged with two errors during the finale of their short two-game series against the Royals, but could have reasonably had another several plays scored that way. Eric Lauer was solid for Milwaukee today, and actually left the game in line for the win. He covered five innings while allowing two unearned runs, both coming in the fourth. Whit Merrifield led off by reaching on an error by Luis Urias, then with two outs, Andrew Benintendi doubled Merrifield home and Hunter Dozier singled to score Benintendi, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
Milwaukee jumped ahead in the fifth. Urias walked to lead off, then moved up to third when Jackie Bradley, Jr. singled. Rowdy Tellez pinch-hit and recorded a sacrifice fly to put the Brewers in the board, followed by a bunt hit from Kolten Wong and a double by Christian Yelich to tie the game up at 2-2. A groundout by Willy Adames brought Wong home to bring the score to 3-2.
The Brewers gave up a crooked number in the sixth just after taking the lead. Brent Suter came on to replace Lauer, and Carlos Santana greeted him with a single. After a flyout, Benintendi reached base on an error by Jace Peterson. Hunter Dozier singled and recorded an RBI, then with two outs, Ryan McBroom reached on an infield single to second base and Nicky Lopez doubled. Another pair of runs ended up coming across, giving the Royals a 5-3 lead by the end of the inning.
Jake Cousings pitched a scoreless seventh, but Angel Perdomo gave up a bomb to Jorge Soler in the eighth to push the score to 6-3. Jandel Gustave worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to post a zero, and the game concluded a season series sweep of the Royals over the Brewers. Milwaukee is off on Thursday before starting a series against the White Sox this weekend.
