Brewers drop finale to White Sox, 3-1

It should be a pretty good pitcher’s duel when both starters have a combined ERA below 2.00, and Sunday’s series finale between Lance Lynn of the Chicago White Sox and Brandon Woodruff of the Milwaukee Brewers did not disappoint. Unfortunately, some early hiccups cost the homestanding Brewers the chance to sweep this series away.

Brandon Woodruff only got scraped up in one inning, the second. He allowed Yoan Moncada to reach on a leadoff single, but then erased him on a double play ball by Andrew Vaughn. The wheels came off a bit with two outs, however. Brian Goodwin walked, then Leury Garcia singled to put runners on first and second. Seby Zavala followed with another single, driving in Goodwin to make it 1-0. Then, Lance Lynn singled on an 0-2 count, scoring the two baserunners and pushing the score to 3-0.

Woodruff would allow only one more hit during the start, a single by Gavin Sheets to lead off the third inning. Otherwise he was dominant for seven frames, allowing just five base knocks with a pair of walks and nine punchouts. It just so happened that today, his counterpart was a bit better.

Lance Lynn scattered six hits during his six innings of work, but was only scored upon in the fifth inning. Tyrone Taylor tripled, then came around to score on a double by Jackie Bradley, Jr. Other than that, the Brewers couldn’t get a runner past second base against Lynn. He walked zero and struck out six before turning things over to the bullpen.

Jake Cousins and Brad Boxberger each posted a scoreless inning to finish off this one, while for the White Sox it was Michael Kopech preceding a two-inning save from Liam Hendriks. The Brewers will take Monday off after the 3-1 loss, then head to Pittsburgh for the start of a three-game series on Tuesday evening.
