The Brewers' 2014 third round pick took time over the weekend to do an interview with BCB.

Brewers 2014 third round pick Cy Sneed, a right-handed pitcher out of Dallas Baptist University, was gracious enough to do a quick interview over the phone with me over the weekend. Here is the transcript of that interview. Huge thank you once again to Cy for taking the time out of what has been a busy week for him to do this! Feel free to give him a follow on Twitter.

BCB: How are you doing?

Cy Sneed: Pretty well.

BCB: I'm sure it's been a crazy week for you. Drafted, engaged, signed your first contract. Have you had any time to celebrate?

Cy Sneed: Nah, not too much. Holding off on the celebration for now.

BCB: It's probably just nice to relax for a bit when you can find the time, too.

Cy Sneed: Oh absolutely, yeah.

BCB: When did you know the Brewers would draft you? Did you have a sense they would call your name, or did it come as a surprise?

Cy Sneed: I got a call from their area guy like ten minutes before the draft that day. So I had an idea, but I wasn't 100% sure. Especially with baseball and draft-wise, nothing's really sure until your name pops up on the board. I tried to keep myself from getting too crazy before I saw that, so I was just trying to be not nervous but not necessarily expecting it at the same time just so I wouldn't be crushed if I didn't get picked.

BCB: Were you happy the Brewers picked you?

Cy Sneed: Absolutely. I was thrilled.

BCB: Who did you grow up rooting for? Born in Idaho, there probably wasn't an obvious choice.

Cy Sneed: Nah, everyone [in Idaho] kind of roots for whoever they want. Everybody just makes up their own guy they want to root for. I really root more for players rather than a team, you know, the guys who play the game the right way or guys I like to watch pitch, that kind of thing. It was cool to get drafted by the Brewers because with everything they bring to the table, they're obviously a great franchise. I also get to start playing here, in the Pioneer League, which is close to home. And, you know, National League teams you get to hit so that'll be fun. They're exactly what I was hoping for.

BCB: And you visited Miller Park recently, too. How did you like the stadium?

Cy Sneed: It was awesome. Great experience to go get to see all that. It was really nice to see that park and how beautiful it is. It makes you work hard every day and gives you a sense what you're working towards.

BCB: A lot of scouting reports pegged you as a reliever moving forward. Do you have a preference between that and starting?

Cy Sneed: I prefer starter. I never really relieved in my life. But, I mean, it's wherever they need me, I'll get out and take the ball whenever they want me to. So it's really up to them, it's not my decision at all. Like I said, I'll take the ball when they need me. But I'm comfortable being a starter because I've been doing that a long time. My brother [Zeb, a prospect in the Royals system] started as a starter, then got put in the bullpen in his second year and has done much better. We'll see, maybe relief is in the Sneed family tree but we'll find out I guess.

BCB: Have the Brewers given you any indication what they see you as moving forward?

Cy Sneed: No, they haven't. Not yet.

BCB: Do you have any personal goals for yourself as you begin your first professional season?

Cy Sneed: No, just don't fall into the trap -- I don't even want to call it a trap -- but don't fall into the thought of "You can go ahead and get your feet wet" or "Ease into it" blah blah blah. Don't do that, just feed yourself right into the fire and expect nothing. Don't get lacksadaisical with the process or your results. You have to attack and go with what's working and what will work at this level, and that's pitching well consistently and knowing how to get people out. I can't just be happy to be here, I have to be always pushing to that next level to get one percent better every day.

BCB: What would you say your biggest strength is as a pitcher?

Cy Sneed: Probably just being able to read hitters. Get scouting reports on those guys. Watch a guy take one at bat and by the fourth or fifth at-bat having a full scouting report on how to pitch him. I think that's my biggest strength because I'm always going to have a plan going in against the guy I'm facing.

BCB: So being from Idaho, how excited are you for a potential move to Wisconsin in the future? Are you looking forward to the hunting?

Cy Sneed: Yeah, it's another great thing. It's a good opportunity with the Brewers. It's in a nice place; Milwaukee isn't an enormous city. It's still large, but it's not New York with millions and millions of people or Dallas-Ft. Worth with all kinds of people. Houston, same thing. San Francisco, L.A. Milwaukee's a little different because it doesn't have that people everywhere kind of thing. It's a little more spread out, less densely populate. So that's a little thing that's kind of been the culture of things I like to do.

BCB: What was your major at Dallas Baptist?

Cy Sneed: Business management.

BCB: Are you going to continue working towards that while playing?

Cy Sneed: Yeah, I will. In the offseasons and stuff. Get those last few credits I have left and knock 'em out so I can just focus on baseball. But I'll leave that until the offseason.

BCB: How long have you been rocking the awesome fu manchu mustache?

Cy Sneed: Well, it's gone now. The Brewers have a rule in their minor leagues that you can't have a mustache past the bottom of your mouth.

BCB: I did not know that.

Cy Sneed: Yup, so it died yesterday. But I'm still rocking the normal stache. Not sure how I feel about it yet, I feel a little bit like a traitor. But I've had that since January of my Freshman year. They told me to shave it just one time, when our team had a big fight last year in the middle of the season and I shaved it off completely. But other than that it's either been fu man or a big bushy mountain-man beard. But there's no beards, only mustaches, so I'll take what I can get.

BCB: But if you make the majors, will it be making a return?

Cy Sneed: Oh absolutely, it would definitely see some attention that's for sure.

BCB: You mentioned your brother before. I've got a couple brothers myself, so I can understand there may be a bit of a friendly sibling rivalry. If given the opportunity would you rather play with Zeb or against him?

Cy Sneed: As a starter I would love to pitch with him just because it would be awesome to pitch seven innings and have my brother come in for the last two and get the save. At the same time it would be really fun to pitch against him, especially if he were a starter and I got to start against him. Either way, being on the same field with him would be really nice, we haven't had that chance in several years. Maybe one day our paths will cross.

BCB: I have one more question, and I can understand if you won't want to answer it. You've been drafted by a team with Ryan Braun the star for the foreseeable future. Do you have any thoughts on him coming into your own professional career?

Cy Sneed: You know, I think it's kind of hard to have thoughts on someone you haven't met and have only seen on TV. I don't think that does justice to a guy like him. I know I wouldn't necessarily want someone to make an assumption on me based off a couple articles they read online, so I don't think it's fair to have a statement or any thoughts on him right now.

BCB: Cy, thanks so much for taking the time to do this with me. Best of luck this season!

Cy Sneed: Thank you!

It's a mere 4 days after the MLB draft started and it looks like the Brewers will have already signed their top picks.

The Brewers selected Hawaiian left-hander Kodi Medeiros with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft. A short 4 days later it appears the two sides have reached an agreement according to this report (h/t Jim Goulart). Medeiros expects to sign with the Brewers later today in Las Vegas. The signing bonus is yet to be disclosed, but it seems to be near $2 million. The slot value for the 12th overall pick is $2,805,700. It was expected that Medeiros would be able to be signed to an underslot deal.

The Brewers only have so much money ($7,605,600) to spend on the draft and with overslot bonuses to both Jacob Gatewood ($445,100 overslot), and Monte Harrison ($699,700 overslot), it's imperative the Brewers find ways to save money on other picks. Teams can go up to 5% ($380,280 in the Brewers case) over their total allotment before losing draft picks in next year's draft so there is some wiggle room. That means they'd at least need to find another $764,520. If indeed the Brewers saved $805,700 on Medeiros that takes care of basically the bare minimum.

While the main goal is to be able to afford Gatewood and Harrison without being penalized a draft pick, it's also important to save money not only to account for the overslot bonuses to Gatewood and Harrison, but to help the Brewers sign some of their later selections that are "hard signs." I don't have figures for all of the signed draftees, but I do know that David Burkhalter signed for $51,900 below slot. Things are looking good.

Teams have until July 15th to sign draftees. We should know well before then who is going to sign and who isn't. The most important thing is that the Brewers have signed the top 3 guys and should likely have enough money left over to sign one or two of their later picks. All things considered, I'd say this was a very successful draft year for the Brew Crew.

Patrick Ebert, the managing editor for Perfect Game, gives us his insight on some of the prospects recently drafted by the Brewers. Today we talk about first round selection Kodi Medeiros.

The MLB draft took place last week and the Brewers made some noise with their top three selections of Kodi Medeiros, Jacob Gatewood, and Monte Harrison. I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Perfect Game's Patrick Ebert about these and a few of the other players taken in the first ten rounds. Today I'm presenting to you the first part of that interview. The second part will come out tomorrow morning. It should be noted that our conversation took place on the second day of the draft so we were unable to talk about rounds 11-40 and the Brewers hadn't yet signed Gatewood and Harrison.

DH: I thought we could start by having you tell us a little about yourself and Perfect Game.

Patrick Ebert: My main role with Perfect Game is to manage all of the original content that hits our site. For people not familiar with what Perfect Game does, our core business centers around the events we produce, both showcases and tournament events geared toward high school players. Our events give players an excellent opportunity to assess themselves while playing with and against the best players either locally, regionally or nationally, depending on the event, and it also gives scouts and college recruiters a one-stop shopping opportunity to view these players. From top prospect lists to all-tournament teams, in addition to our content that focuses on the draft, high school and college baseball, my goal is to present all of that information in the best, most user friendly way possible.

DH: The Brewers seemed to surprise some people by selecting Kodi Medeiros with their first round pick but you guys at Perfect Game were pretty high on him, right? Can you give us your impression of him?

PE: During the spring of 2013 a contact I have in the advising world reached out to me about Kodi Medeiros. We had him listed on our state follow lists, but not as an impact, early round type of player. My contact advised me that there was this lefthander from Hawaii that was throwing in the mid-90s with an easy arm and a killer breaking ball. He also informed me that this player was one heck of a hitter. Doing my own due diligence, I followed up this tip with a Southern California area scout who confirmed that this player was the real deal.

We ended up getting Medeiros to our National Showcase at the Metrodome at this time last year. I believe he pitched in the first game of the event, along with some other notable arms, and he was lights out from the very beginning, grabbing the attention of everyone in the building. His fastball peaked at 94 at that event, with excellent movement that clearly made the opposing batters uncomfortable, to go along with a really good slider and a promising changeup. One of our scouts also commented that he took the best round of batting practice that day, as he's a very good overall athlete.

We invited him to our PG All-American Classic game held every year in mid-August at Petco Park, which serves as basically a high school all-star game. Medeiros continued to steal the show there as well, and in particular made MLB Network analyst Eric Byrnes audibly gasp at just how wicked his slider was. His slider was so nasty and had so much break that it made a pretty good defensive catcher, Jakson Reetz, who was the MVP of that game, look clueless behind the plate. Which, as an aside, is why it's important the Brewers draft a strong defensive catcher, even if he can't hit, at some point in the draft to help with Medeiros' development in the lower levels.

Questions have risen about his low arm slot and the fact that he's only 6-foot or 6-foot-1 while questioning his changeup and have unfairly pegged him as a future reliever as a result. Todd Gold, our own Southern California scout, has been Medeiros' biggest supporter, suggesting at times that we (Perfect Game) should ranked him No. 1 in our own rankings given his upside, and Todd even managed to get over to Hawaii this spring to see Medeiros perform at the Hawaii state baseball tournament. He didn't look as good there, but we've seen enough of him to know just how special he could be.

DH: Wow. My initial, admittedly not terribly well informed, reaction was that Medeiros was an underslot signing to spread some money around later in the draft so it's really exciting to hear how much you guys respect his potential. You mentioned his low arm slot. Is that something we should be worried about with regards to injury risk more so than with a "traditional" arm slot?

PE: I still think Medeiros could sign for less than slot, and he will have to if the team has a realistic chance of signing their next two picks, Jacob Gatewood and Monte Harrison. I think the Brewers are well aware of this, but you're right, it's nice that the team may be able to combine such a talent at a potentially "discounted" rate.

Regarding his arm slot, yes, this sometimes sends up a red flag, but it's not a huge deal to us. All pitches come in different shapes and sizes, and Medeiros is so athletic and his delivery is so free and easy that it doesn't concern us all that much. I think with the rash of injuries to pitchers at almost every level these days leaves people searching for any and every thing possible to point to as a reason not to like a guy.

Medeiros himself has said that he models his game after Chris Sale, who also throws from a lower, slinging arm angle, and it's worked pretty well for him.

DH: Being a high school pitcher, I assume we should expect him to take a while to reach the majors. Do you agree and do you have an idea of how quickly he could move through the system?

PE: Yes, it's important to be patient with any high school player. I remember one Milwaukee radio host several years ago arguing that Prince Fielder wasn't going to be any good because he couldn't be promoted almost immediately to the big leagues. That of course is an extreme argument, but it does point out the varying levels of opinions people have with these picks.

I think Medeiros could move one level at a time. The Brewers typically send their high school picks to Arizona, followed up with a year in Helena and then low-A. Where he could move more quickly is when he reaches high-A ball you could see him split a year with AA and then do the same between AA/AAA the year after that. He could move very quickly as there's a good chance he enjoys immediate success, especially if they get him an established catcher as I noted previously, but at the same time they're going to have to avoid being tempted to move him up too quickly should that occur.

I think 2018/19 would be the earliest expectation of his debut, and even that may be aggressive.

DH: You mentioned the Brewers might try to get an older catcher to help groom Mediros. Do you think Greg McCall is the guy?

PE: Ninth-rounder Greg McCall very well may have been drafted to be Medeiros' personal catcher, so it will be interesting to see if the two are placed at the same level. McCall is a senior, and likely an easy/quick sign who has a reputation for strong defensive skills behind the plate. He did provide some pop this year with 11 home runs at Texas-Arlington, but I think it's clear what his purpose in the system will be.

*The rest of the interview will be put up tomorrow morning.
Less than an hour after Monte Harrison's signing was reported, Brewers sign second pick Jacob Gatewood.

It's a good day for the Brewers and for us! Not long after the Brewers signed Monte Harrison, they also signed their second overall pick, shortstop Jacob Gatewood. It's being reported they signed him for $1.83 million which is slightly more than what Harrison signed for. The slot value for Gatewood was $1,384,900. It was expected that it would take overslot to sign Gatewood and this is not an extreme overslot bonus.

Again, this is a big coup for the Brewers. With Kodi Medeiros expected to sign for underslot and 4 college seniors (and 1 4th year college junior) drafted in the first 10 rounds, the Brewers should find themselves with a solid amount of money to play around with when trying to sign some of the hard to sign guys in the later rounds.

Widely considered a tough sign, Monte Harrison actually becomes the first 2014 Brewers draftee to sign.

The Brewers went risky with the top of their draft this year. Not only did they take high risk/high reward type players with their first 3 picks, they also drafted three sport athlete Monte Harrison out of high school. Committed to Nebraska as a two way player (baseball and football) it was no sure thing that he would sign if drafted even higher than he went. I know I saw several people suggesting it was going to take close to $2.5 million to sign. Therefore, we should consider it a big win that the Brewers were able to secure him for merely $1.8 million.

The slot value for the Brewers second round pick was valued at $1,100,300 so they did go overslot. That's not as extreme as I had expected however. Their first rounder Kodi Medeiros is expected to sign for underslot so the Brewers should very easily be able to afford Jacob Gatewood at overslot too. This is great news for those of us concerned about such things.

Today is the final day of the draft which covers rounds 11-40. The Brewers have taken a handful of players that have good talent for the round but are considered hard, or in some more rare cases impossible, to sign. Should the Brewers save enough money on the college seniors they drafted in some of the rounds leading up through 10, that will help them in signing one or two of those kids.

Just a few late round names to be aware of:

Jordan Yamamoto

J.J. Schwarz

Patrick Weigel

Turner Larkins

One final observation: As I'm writing this the draft is not yet completed. I'm not sure if there is any interesting "hard to sign" talent left, but if there is the Brewers might try to go for them knowing they should have money to play with. Harrison's signing is an interesting development.

The college senior may not have a lot of pop, but could advance through the system quickly.

With the 146th overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft, the Brewers have selected third baseman Dustin Demuth, out of the University of Indiana.

A senior for the Hoosiers, Demuth bats lefty and throws righty. This season, he has hit .374/.449/.531 with forty strikeouts and five homers in 57 games. He holds a .344 batting average as a four-year starter and has a .406 collegiate on-base percentage. Outside of a rough 2012, the 22-year-old has been a star for Indiana.

The best news for this pick is that DeMuth should be a fairly polished hitter who can move through the system quickly, which is great for a Brewers team who has nothing at the hot corner beyond aging veteran Aramis Ramirez. If he proves he can hit, it wouldn't be all that surprising to see him man third base sooner than later as he wouldn't need a lot of time in the system.

The main concern about DeMuth seems to be a lack of power potential. Though he has a nice swing and fine bat speed, his power numbers have been lacking for a corner infielder. He tends to be more of a gap hitter, though, with great contact ability. That could profile him similarly to Cardinals' third baseman Matt Carpenter, who hit .318 with a league-leading 55 doubles last year and is off to a good start in 2014.

As a college senior, there's little doubt that DeMuth will sign. Again, signability will be key for the Brewers moving forward on the draft after choosing four high school players in their first five picks.

DeMuth is on Twitter, if you'd like to give him a follow.

Stokes, a speedy centerfielder, is committed to the University of Maryland.

Here's an interesting wrench thrown in by the Brewers: With the 116th pick in the 2014 MLB draft, Milwaukee has chosen outfielder Troy Stokes, a high school player out of Maryland.

I say it's interesting, because everyone figured the team would be going very safe in Day Two of the draft in an effort to save some money for their first three overall picks. Now, the new strategy may be to save money to sign four of their first five picks.

Stokes is the fourth prep player taken by the Brewers. His biggest asset is certainly his speed: Perfect Game USA has him running the 60-yard dash in 6.47 seconds and projects him as a lead-off hitter with blazing speed on the basepaths and in center field. He's raw and needs work on his footwork but has a quick first step that helps him make up for mistakes. He also is reportedly a smart player.

He's not the biggest guy, coming in at 5'10" and 180 pounds. He isn't likely to hit for a lot of power, but rather will be a contact player with gap hitting potential. His speed should certainly allow him to pick up a few extra base hits.

Scout.com had Stokes ranked the 121st-best prep school player coming available in this draft.

Stokes is committed verbally to the University of Maryland.
